The Other Strange Embrace

When I first came up with the title for Strange Embrace there was no internet. It was tough to check if a title was totally original. Then along came Google and I found that there was another Strange Embrace published back in 1962, written by Ben Christopher, one of the pen names of noted crime writer Lawrence Block.

I sent off for a copy from the States. It turned out to be a lurid and quite excellent pulp noir revolving around a lesbian underworld I had no idea existed in quite the form described. Apparently 'Strange' was a code word for Lesbian. Check out these pulp covers:

FORGIVE ME, I'M FEELING A LITTLE STRANGE...

Then again, some of these women went too far and became distinctly... ODD?!!

Thanks to Bookscans for the cover scans. Check them out - they now have an unbelievable 65,000 covers to boggle your eyes.

  1. I'm sure you were aware of "strange" and the directors cut of Strange Embrace actually has a sexual affair between Sarah and Anthony's mother. Mainstream comics just wasn't ready for it yet. The prudes.

  2. Yeah, that one definitely slips into the "odd" category. One day...
