WAR SPAWN - THE SOMME

Today is the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest and most pointless battles of human history.

Back in 2008, when I was writing SPAWN for Todd McFarlane and Image comics, I was using one-off stories to explore the ancestry of Al Simmons and his family. One of those stories was set in the First World War at the Battle Of the Somme. Artist, Mike Mayhew, pulled out all the stops on this one, hiring actors to pose in costume for the sake of authenticity. Though some of the events are obviously fictional as you can see from the cover, the descriptions of the battle are accurate.

Spawn #179 was edited by Brian Haberlin, Art by Mike Mayhew with colours by Andy Troy and letters by Tom Orzechowski.
